Press Conference

HKU held a press conference today to introduce the flagship Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering programme by the newly established School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME), which brings together the strengths of four faculties—Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, and Science—to foster interdisciplinary innovation, education, and research.

Speakers at the press conference included Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine, Professor Chak-sing Lau; Dean of Science, Professor Qiang Zhou; Acting Dean of Dentistry, Professor Lijian Jin; Director of SBME, Professor Michael Häusser; Programme Director of the Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering, Professor Kevin Tsia; and Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Min Wang.

Professor Michael Häusser, Director of SBME, highlighted the School’s pioneering role, saying, “SBME is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. It represents a pioneering initiative that integrates medicine, engineering, dentistry, and science to advance biomedical engineering in ways that are transformative and globally relevant.”

He further emphasised the School’s collaborative mission: “Our mission is to tackle pressing health challenges through interdisciplinary research and technological innovation, nurturing a new generation of talent through education, innovation, and discovery.”

The flagship programme, with a history of over 20 years, has expanded its local intake to 75 students this year and adjusted the JUPAS expected admission score to 25. There are also plans to introduce more undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the future.

香港大學（港大）今天舉行記者會，介紹新成立的生物醫學工程學院轄下旗艦工學學士（生物醫學工程）課程。該學院結合醫學、工程、牙醫及理學四大學院的優勢，致力推動跨學科的創新、教育及研究。

出席記者會的講者包括副校長（健康）及李嘉誠醫學院院長劉澤星教授；理學院院長周強教授；署理牙醫學院院長金力堅教授；生物醫學工程學院院長 Michael Häusser 教授；工學學士（生物醫學工程）課程主任謝堅文教授，以及工程學院院務委員會主席兼機械工程系王敏教授。

SBME院長Michael Häusser教授強調學院的先驅角色：「SBME是全港首個同類型學院，開創性地整合醫學、工程、牙科與科學領域，以變革性且具全球影響力的方式推動生物醫學工程發展。」他進一步闡述學院的使命：「我們致力通過跨學科研究與科技創新應對迫切醫療挑戰，並透過教育、創新與探索培育新一代人才。」

具逾廿年歷史的旗艦課程今年將本地收生人數擴展至75人，亦將文憑試預期入學分數下調至25分，並計劃未來增設更多學士及研究生課程。
